Daniel Negreanu Misreads Hand Busts WSOP $10K Pot-Limit Omaha Event

Ever misread your poker hand and felt like an amateur? Don’t worry. Even Daniel Negreanu does it.
The Poker Hall of Famer and seven-time WSOP bracelet winner has been eliminated from this year’s $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship after a rare misread led him to shove all-in against American player Mark Steinberg with his tournament life on the line.
It marks the second championship exit of the week for Negreanu, who was also bounced from the $50,000 Poker Players Championship by none other than Phil Hellmuth. And with the freezeout format in play, we won’t be seeing him back in this one.
PokerNews’ Tim Baker was on the floor to catch the hand that brought Negreanu’s run to an end.

Negreanu’s Fatal Misread
Steinberg opened from the small blind, and Negreanu made it 1,800 from the big. Steinberg called.
Both players checked the flop of 7*♣2♥3♦* and saw the K*♠* fall on the turn. Steinberg checked again, and Negreanu bet 2,500. Steinberg called.
With the 10*♠* landing on the river, Steinberg knuckled it over to Negreanu once more. That’s when the trouble began for Kid Poker, who jammed for 4,600, well covered and at risk.
Steinberg called, and both players tabled their hands. Negreanu turned over K*♣Q♠J♦9♠* and immediately realized the mistake.
“I misread my hand. I thought I had king-ten. I would have checked.”
“I misread my hand,” he exclaimed. “I thought I had king-ten. I would have checked.”
Instead, just holding a pair of kings, Negreanu would find his tournament finished after Steinberg revealed K*♦10♥8♣5♣*, rivering two pair with the elusive ten to send the Canadian to the rail in one of the most extraordinary hands of the summer.
Other Notable Misreads
Negreanu isn’t the first famous player to misread his hand, and certainly won’t be the last.
Cash game legend Alan Keating is also a holder of the dubious accolade, having torched off a six-figure sum on his High Stakes Poker debut back in 2023.
Other notable examples have been seen on the ever-popular Hustler Casino Live, where San Man snap-called with just six-high to cost himself $20,000 against Dr. H.
However, with a WSOP bracelet on the line, and from a player of Negreanu’s calibre, it’s surely one of the most high-profile misreads in recent history.

How many decks are used in poker?
how many decks are used in poker? In most popular poker variants, such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha, a standard deck of 52 playing cards is used. Each deck contains four suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades) and consists of 13 ranks (Ace, 2 through 10, and the face cards: Jack, Queen, and King). However, it’s important to note that the number of decks used in poker can vary depending on the specific game or variation being played. For example, some poker tournaments or cash games may use multiple decks to speed up the gameplay or reduce the frequency of card shuffling. In such cases, it is common to use two or more decks that are shuffled together.
