The PokerStars European Poker Tour in Barcelona has been a grand celebration of the tour’s 20th anniversary, Spanish culture, and on-the-felt triumphs. And now, PokerStars is championing women’s poker with a major announcement unveiled during a special Ladies Day Breakfast meet and greet ahead of the €550 Women’s event at Casino Barcelona.

Led by ambassador Kerryjane Craigie, the spadie brand revealed the schedule for the Women’s Winter Festival, designed to “encourage women to participate in live poker games with aspirational outcomes.”

This inaugural four-day festival runs from November 21-24 inside the historic Hippodrome Casino. And PokerStars is pulling out all the stops to get women into the game by slapping a £100,000 guarantee on the series’ Main Event, which features three starting flights and a £400 buy-in.

PokerStars Continues to Encourage Women

Kerryjane Craigie PokerStars has long supported women’s poker, previously teaming up with Poker Power for the Women’s Bootcamp, and now, the spotlight shines even brighter with this first-of-its-kind festival for the platform.

Ambassador Craigie has meticulously crafted the event based on insights from focus groups with female players around the globe. Her dedication to creating an event that aligns with the needs and preferences of female players is evident in every aspect of the festival.

“I am so excited about this event; honing in on the schedule and finalizing the details truly gave me goosebumps,” said Craigie, who is also the Director of Poker at the Hippodrome Casino. “Opportunities for women to access more inspirational poker events drive all that I do.

“The attention to every detail of this four-day festival has been amazing to be part of, and I believe we have hit the mark. We’ve built an event around the audience—now I am hoping they will come.”

What’s on the Schedule?

In addition to the Women’s Only Main Event, the festival will feature a 50/50 NLH Freezeout on November 23. This £220 one-day tournament ensures an equal playing field by requiring pairs of men and women to enter together.

While the event is not a tag team format, added value will be awarded to the partnership that accumulates the most points on the tournament leaderboard. Players are encouraged to secure their partners early, with the Hippodrome offering assistance in finding a suitable match from a pool of interested players.

The festival’s schedule also includes an open £220 NHL Single Re-Entry tournament on November 24 and a Women’s Closer Freeroll. The champion will receive a women’s package to EPT Prague, with additional prizes for those making the final table.

Qualifying Paths a Plenty

Starting September 22, women-only online satellites will be available on PokerStars for players in the .COM market. The first €25,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament of the 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona drew many high-roller poker stars to Casino Barcelona. After the last card was dealt and the final chip exchanged, Byron Kaverman emerged victorious, claiming the trophy and a €381,060 prize for his efforts. Just two days prior, Kaverman had finished second in the €12,300 Cuatro Knockout, earning €119,400. This time, he went all the way, defeating Markkos Ladev in heads-up play. Ladev, who took home €248,500, secured his largest-ever live cash. The remaining €1,104,460 prize pool, generated by 46 entries, was shared by Mike Watson, Enrico Camosci, Niklas Astedt, and Sam Grafton, each earning at least €77,300 for reaching the money.

Mokri burst onto the poker scene when he made a run to sixth place in the PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event in 2022. The following year, he took down the €100,000 Super High Roller title for €750,960, his first-ever live tournament victory. He had to wait an entire year for his second, and, to no surprise, it came here in Barcelona as he emerged the champion over a 47-player field in the €20,000 No-Limit Hold’em event.

Steve ODwyer Outlasts the Field Into the Early Hours to Win the €12300 PokerStars Cuatro Knockout Steve ODwyer was crowned the €12300 PokerStars Cuatro Knockout champion at the European Poker Tour Barcelona. It was his first win on the tour since 2022.

Steve O’Dwyer had waited two years to get his hands on another PokerStars European Poker Tour spade trophy, so he didn’t seem to mind taking until the early hours of the morning to seal his victory in the €12,300 PokerStars Cuatro Knockout. With the clock approaching 5 a.m. inside the Casino Barcelona, O’Dwyer defeated Byron Kaverman in a short heads-up match to claim the bounty and €163,720 top prize, plus four bounties for an additional €48,000. The win was O’Dwyer’s first on the EPT since a €25,000 No-Limit Hold’em event here in Barcelona two years ago and 11th overall, including the 2013 EPT Monte Carlo Main Event.

The $1,050 buy-in WCOOP Boot Camp Main Event drew in 502 entrants to PokerStars, and Sweden’s Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson outlasted them all. Mattsson added $76,031 to his online poker tournament lifetime winnings of over $35 million after coming out on top of the star-studded field. The $1,050 Main Event’s 502-strong field was cut to only 38 on Day 1, with the surviving players returning to the battlefield on August 19. Start of Day 2 chip leader Tom “hitthehole” Middleton couldn’t build on his opening day success, falling in 26th place for $3,495.
